Interfering With Emergency Vehicles

Interfering with Emergency Vehicles

Interfering with Emergency Vehicles in Rogers County is a misdemeanor crime. In the fall of 2017, a Johannesburg firefighter posted a fuming message on facebook.  It stated that emergency vehicles were blocked by drivers and other gawkers from reaching a devastating wreck in a timely manner.  As a result, six people died on the scene.  One driver even used vulgar language toward firemen who asked him to move his vehicle and then purposely blocked them more with his car.  In that state of Oklahoma interfering with emergency vehicles is a crime.

Interfering with Emergency Vehicles

When an emergency vehicle is on duty or on the way to an emergency scene, they have the right-of-way.  This is under Title 47 §11-405 of the Oklahoma Statutes Annotated.  There are two main situations that apply to emergency vehicles.

  1. When Emergency Vehicle is Approaching. If an emergency vehicle is on the road and approaching you, you must give them the right-of-way.  This means if you are in an intersection you clear the intersection and then stop.  However, if you are driving in your lane you must pull over to the side as much as possible.  Once you do this stop and wait until the emergency vehicle passes before you resume driving.
  2. When Emergency Vehicle is On-Scene.

If an emergency vehicle is working an emergency scene, then you must make room for them.  This means that you must pull into the lane farthest from the wreck as possible.  You should also slow down and try to keep driving.

Interfering with Emergency Vehicles and the Punishments

In Oklahoma a series of fines may come against you if you violate the right of way or fail to yield to emergency vehicles.  While you are likely to receive tickets for inattentive driving or other traffic offenses, you will also face fines up to $1,000 too.  It is important to note that if your actions cause injury or death to another person, then the penalties will be much harsher.  You may even be liable in civil court as well to pay any restitution or damages to the victims.
